Furtive late night socks.
| I have a confession to make. I don't like belled sleeves. They look fantastic on other people, don't misunderstand me. I think they look graceful, feminine, and just medieval enough to appeal to my non-academic love of all things pre-17th century. In fact, I love the way they look so much that I have several be-belled sweaters and shirts in my closet right now. The problem is that I never wear them. I just can't stand all that material flapping around my wrist while I try to do things like writing, cooking (*woosh* says the flappy sleeve near the stove), typing, and knitting. Even close-fitting sleeves are always pushed up to my elbows after I've had the shirt on for an hour or two. I know, I'm a strange, sad girl with claustrophobic wrists and I need help. But I also need to stop acquiring shirts with those swooshy sleeves. I realized this when I was working on my Tubey last night. I was once again convincing myself that I'd love the sleeves when I was done, because the sweater looked so great on Cassie in the photos. And then it hit me. I don't need to make the sleeves the way they are in the pattern. My god, I can alter that baby until it's just a tube top if I want. I won't, of course, but I think I am going to frog the sleeves to the elbows and make them 3/4 length instead. More pictures as this develops. And I started making a sock tonight. No pattern, just messing around with colors -- ok, two different shades of grey -- and seeing what comes out. |

post a commentHi Sarah -- I came by to check out your blog and wanted to say hi! Your Tubey will look great with the elbow length sleeves, which is exactly how I plan to make my next one! Can't wait to see yours. I'm also working on a Clapotis. Somewhere. I've actually set it aside for a while whilst I work on some other projects, but it will get finished one of these days!
Keep up the good work and I'll send you a Sexy Knitters Club invite tomorrow.
Good work, I can't bear anything longer than elbow length either.
And it makes your tubey Even More Unique and personal and generally fab. I am in awe. :D
(I need to pick your brains about clapotises... clapotisii? Anyway I will message you if that's ok)
Yay! You have crossed the frontier of pattern independence.
It's like cooking; once you learn the basic concepts, you can strike off on your own.
I don't like loose cuffs, either. If I'm going to have long sleeves, I want those babies ribbed or buttoned as tightly as possible. Anything else gets shoved up my arm, like you. Must be genetic.

I THINK I love bell sleeves, I SAY I love bell sleeves. I BUY as if I love bell sleeves.
Then I wear them and find myself continually tucking them out of my way and realise they are just so very wrong.
I'm the same with my fringe.
good luck with the socks
YES. Same thing with my hair. I've got a haircut I love, but the minute I'm back at home I pin my hair out of my eyes.
I think I'm too practical for this fashionable stuff.
Clapotidae!
I love the way that when you knit your own garment that you can alter it to suit you.
