Menacing knits.
| A huge thank you to Juno for pointing out that making the armholes of the Jamesey shorter would naturally make the upper body shorter. And she did it without using the words "moron," "blonde," or "humanities student." But since the last entry, I've had project apathy. I didn't want to pick up the sweater because I couldn't face the endless ribbing. So instead I started a Christmas present for a friend. You all know what this is, right? ![]() Clap-o-tee in some gorgeous black merino that I got on sale a few months ago. If I didn't like this gal so much I'd keep it for myself. And still, while I distract myself with the lovely, quick, and sexy Clapotis, the Jamesey languishes in the margins. ![]() Knit me. ![]() Kniiiiiiiiiiiit meeeeeeeeeee. ![]() Kniiiiiiiiiiiit meeeeeeee or yoooooooou will beeeeeee a rotten siiiiiister. So I did. I'm up to the start of the pattern on the chest, and thrilled -- just thrilled -- to be done with the ribbing. I'm not acknowledging that I have to knit the arms yet. ![]() Another question for you all, but this one has nothing to do with my inability to think in three dimensions or read a pattern. Do those of you who comment (or even those who don't, if you're out there) check back and see if I replied to your comment? One of my biggest complaints about Blogger is that I can't email you in response the way that the fancy bloggers do. If no one is checking back (and be honest now), then I'm going to look for hosting elsewhere. Or, if this comment-reply method is working fine, I'll stay on Blogger. I hope to be back to posting more than once a week in the near future. I've just switched from an academic schedule that allowed me a four-day week to one that has me busy every single day from 9-5 (and then the requisite reading at night). I'm exhausted, but I hope that some creative time management and a much needed weekend with TB (every time I type that I think of the galloping consumption -- he may need a new blog-name) will help me relax and recharge a bit. Have a lovely and consumption-free weekend, everyone! |

post a commentOh, you want wordpress. Also free, a little bit harder to configure the layout, but much more potential I think.
Also the posting page has a panel on one side notifying you of new comments so you never miss any and you can ask commenters to leave their email address (I think, having taken all comments off mine).
It looks like this: http://www.kittenspyjamas.com/dashboard.gif
I have looked at wordpress. The only catch would be finding cheap hosting, so I may be soliciting you all for suggestions soon.
Also, is this your old blog with old comments or have you started a new secret one that I don't know about?
That is the true test of friendship, isn't it? Do I like this person enough to give them a handmade item that I secretly want to keep?
And btw, my hosting (Siteground.com) is pretty cheap, like $5/month--definitely within the grad student budget! I've been pretty happy with them--setting up wordpress was a piece of cake.
As a fellow grad student, I pretty much consider only "free" to be within the grad student budget, for anything beyond food and rent. That may have something to do with being in Manhattan, but anyway.
Not that I don't hate blogger, but it seems crazy to me to move to a different space and pay money you're not paying now if you don't really need the added advantages. As far as comments go, I do check back if I ever comment anything actually worth being responded to (which is rare), but I also basically comment on the blogs I read regularly, so I'm likely to look at them again regardless. Plus, if you have a really important reply to a comment, you can just put it in another post, and all your regular readers will be sure to see it. Moreover, most commenters who have blogs have that link shown in their comment, so you can just go to their blogs, and get their email addresses there. A little more fussy, I grant you, but if I have an extra $5 a month, I'd rather spend it at KnitPicks than paying for web space.
Besides, shouldn't you have free web space from your university, anyway?
And there are a million free image hosting sites. That's where I put my images, so my uni space doesn't get filled up too fast.
Hm. To spend the $5 or not to spend? I could definitely swing the extra cash, it's just a question of whether or not I have the time to put into developing the new site. I love the way that independently hosted blogs look (like yours, Ashley), but I know that for it to look nice I'd have to put in a couple of hours (at least) to set the damn thing up.
I do have webspace through the university, but I'd rather not associate it with the blog. I don't mind blog people knowing about my academic life, but I'd rather that people from my academic life didn't find out about the blog. They just wouldn't understand, y'know?
I think that this may have to wait until winter break, anyway. My schedule is still kicking my ass.
*shuffles feet*
UM. Well yes, I may have shut down my blog that was meant to be interesting and started a boring one instead. It is dull tho.
Aha! I found you!
And it isn't boring. If you think that is boring, these kniting blogs must put you to sleep in seconds. :)
have a shuftie at blogspirit:
http://www.blogspirit.com/en/
I'm not sure what they have, but they look very cool.
I'm on Movable Type, but then I'm a geek.
FWIW, I tend to check back on comments I've left - but it seems to be "oh yeah, I made that comment..." then having a look.
No--I had no idea you replied in the comments! Now I'm off to go read them!
You actually can reply on Blogger. If you have the comments directed to your inbox (and I have a separate free email account for blog stuff), you will get the comment with a reply address for the people who leave comments. This will only work for people who leave their address or Blogger folks who have their email address logged in. Good luck!
Haha -- I was afraid there would be someone! Now I'm worried that you think I've been incredibly rude all this time!
I recently did start having my comments emailed to me, but most of my commenters don't supply an email address. You don't have to! But because of this I'm thinking of switching to wordpress or something similar. And aside from the convenience for readers, I get a kick out of getting email. I spend a lot of time writing or reading in solitary confinement, so email is a reminder that people are alive out there.
As a blonde humanities type person I could hardly say that, could I?
Anyway, totally understandable. Sometimes the patterns just mess with one for fun.
Hey there, Specs. To answer your blogging response question--I do check back. Sometimes I forget :) But I do eventually get around to it.
i highly recommend livejournal.
there are paid accounts, but you can get a perfectly good free one...especially if you are sponsored by a paid member. after checking out your blog, i would be happy to assist.
